The Syriac thus encodes both the conjunction and the verb of the following Greek clause in a single inflected form.

Greek and Latin use a present participle (συζητοῦντες / conquirentes) to subordinate the questioning to the main verb; the Peshitta employs a periphrastic past with auxiliary ܗܘܘ (ܘܒܥܝܢ ܗܘܘ, 'they were inquiring'), converting the participial construction into a finite durative clause.

Where Greek has the concise indirect question τί ἐστιν τὸ ('what it is, namely the [rising]') and the Vulgate reduces to quid esset, the Peshitta expands into a fuller demonstrative clause ܕܡܢܐ ܗܝ ܗܕܐ ܡܠܬܐ ('what is this word/saying'), repeating ܡܠܬܐ from earlier and adding the demonstrative ܗܕܐ for emphasis and clarity.

Greek νεκρῶν and Latin mortuis are bare substantival plurals ('the dead'); the Peshitta renders the phrase with the periphrasis ܒܝܬ ܡܝܬܐ ('the house/place of the dead'), a characteristic Syriac idiom (bēth mīthē) for the realm of the dead.

Greek uses an articular infinitive (τὸ ἀναστῆναι, 'the rising') as the subject of the indirect question, while the Vulgate uses a finite subjunctive in a temporal clause (cum ... resurrexerit); the Peshitta employs a relative-temporal construction ܕܡܐ ܕܩܡ ('when he rose'), agreeing syntactically more closely with the Latin than the Greek.
