Greek uses the relative ὅς plus the modal particle ἄν (ὃς ἂν, 'whoever') to mark an indefinite generalising relative, matched by Latin quicumque; Syriac ܡܢ ('whoever') conveys the same indefinite sense lexically without a separate modal particle.
