The Greek recitative ὅτι introducing direct discourse is rendered interrogatively in both Peshitta (ܡܢܐ 'what') and Vulgate (Quid 'why/what'), reflecting an interpretive reading in which the disciples' question is framed as a direct query rather than a mere quotation marker.

Both the Peshitta (ܗܟܝܠ) and the Vulgate (ergo, 'therefore') supply an inferential particle absent from the Greek text. This shared 'minor agreement' against the Greek likely reflects a common interpretive tradition reading the question as a logical inference from the foregoing discourse.

The Greek and Peshitta name only the scribes (οἱ γραμματεῖς / ܣܦܪܐ); the Vulgate expands to pharisæi et scribæ ('the Pharisees and scribes'), a harmonisation toward the frequent NT pairing of the two groups (cf. Matt 23). This expansion is not supported by the Greek or Syriac witnesses here.

The Greek subordinating ὅτι ('that') is absorbed in the Peshitta into the proclitic ܕ- prefixed to ܐܠܝܐ, while the Vulgate uses the conjunction quia; all three function to introduce the reported clause.

The Greek impersonal δεῖ ('it is necessary') and the Vulgate oportet both express objective necessity, whereas the Peshitta ܘܠܐ (from ܘܠܐ 'it is fitting/proper') connotes propriety or obligation, a subtly different modal nuance characteristic of Syriac rendering of Greek δεῖ.

Greek uses the bare aorist infinitive ἐλθεῖν dependent on δεῖ; the Peshitta employs a finite subjunctive-like construction ܕܢܐܬܐ ('that he should come') with the proclitic ܕ-, a construction-level difference, while the Vulgate venire mirrors the Greek infinitive.
