All three render the adversative-resumptive connective: Greek postpositive δέ, Syriac postpositive ܕܝܢ (itself a loan of the Greek particle), and the Latin sentence-initial At. The Latin shifts the connective to clause-initial position per Latin syntactic norms, a minor word-order accommodation.

Greek uses the single imperfect ἠγνόουν ('they kept failing to understand') and Latin matches with the imperfect ignorabant; the Syriac analytically renders the same durative sense with negation ܠܐ plus participle ܝܕܥܝܢ and the auxiliary ܗܘܘ, a periphrastic construction typical of Syriac for the imperfect/continuous past.

Greek τὸ ῥῆμα ('the declaration/matter') is rendered by Syriac ܠܡܠܬܐ with an anticipatory proleptic object pronoun ܠܗ ('it'), a characteristic Syriac construction marking the definite object; Latin verbum supplies the bare accusative without the resumptive pronoun.

The Vulgate inserts a colon after verbum, dividing the clause for sense-pause; neither the Greek nor the Syriac transmit punctuation at this point, this being an editorial feature of the Clementine text.

The pronominal object 'him' is expressed in Greek by the separate accusative αὐτόν and in Latin by the separate eum, whereas Syriac incorporates it as the enclitic object suffix -ܝܗܝ on the verb ܕܢܫܐܠܘܢܝܗܝ, a synthetic feature of the Semitic verb.

Greek aorist infinitive ἐπερωτῆσαι ('to ask') and Latin infinitive interrogare are matched by the Syriac subordinated finite verb ܕܢܫܐܠܘܢܝܗܝ ('that they should ask him'), introduced by the relative/complementiser ܕ; Syriac thus prefers a finite subjunctive complement clause where Greek and Latin employ a complementary infinitive.
