Greek expresses repentance with a single verb (μετανοῶσιν) and Syriac likewise with one finite verb (ܕܢܬܘܒܘܢ, from the root meaning 'to turn/return'); the Vulgate uses the periphrastic idiom pœnitentiam agerent ('that they might do penance'), an analytic construction that later carried significant theological weight in Western penitential doctrine.

The Greek transmits a comma after μετανοῶσιν while the Vulgate closes the clause with a colon; the Peshitta as given carries no terminal punctuation. These are editorial divisions and do not affect the sense.
