Greek and Latin render the action as an aorist/present participle (ἐξελθὼν, exiens, 'having gone out'); the Peshitta uses a finite verb prefixed with the conjunctive waw (ܘܢܦܩ, 'and he went out'), turning the subordinate participle into a coordinate clause — a characteristic Syriac paratactic construction.

All three name Jesus as subject, but its placement differs: Greek and Latin position the proper noun after the verb of seeing (with Latin deferring it to the end of the clause, Jesus, set off by a colon), whereas the Peshitta fronts ܝܫܘܥ immediately after the opening verb. The Syriac also lacks the Greek article ὁ, which has no equivalent in Semitic syntax.

Greek places the adjective before the noun (πολὺν ὄχλον); both the Peshitta (ܟܢܫܐ ܣܓܝܐܐ) and the Vulgate (turbam multam) follow the more natural attributive order with the adjective following the noun.

The Vulgate inserts a colon after Jesus, a Clementine editorial punctuation mark dividing the perception from the emotional response; no corresponding mark exists in the Greek NA28 word stream or the Peshitta.

Greek ἐσπλαγχνίσθη ('was moved in the inward parts') is a vivid visceral verb; the Peshitta ܐܬܪܚܡ (root r-ḥ-m, 'showed mercy/compassion') and the Latin periphrastic misertus est ('had pity') both render the emotion abstractly rather than with the Greek bowel-metaphor.

Greek uses preposition + accusative pronoun (ἐπ᾽ αὐτούς) and Latin matches it analytically (super eos); the Peshitta compresses the same idea into a single inflected prepositional form ܥܠܝܗܘܢ ('upon them'), with the pronominal suffix carrying the object.

Greek ὡς ('as, like') and Latin sicut introduce a simple comparison, while the Peshitta employs the verbal root d-m-y in ܕܕܡܝܢ ('who resembled'), rendering the comparison through a finite relative verb rather than a comparative particle.

Greek and Latin express 'not having a shepherd' with a negated participle (μὴ ἔχοντα ποιμένα / non habentes pastorem); the Peshitta recasts this as a negated possessive existential relative clause ܕܠܝܬ ܠܗܘܢ ܪܥܝܐ ('who have no shepherd to them'), the standard Syriac idiom for possession using lyt + lām-suffix.

Greek ἤρξατο and Latin cœpit are single inceptive verbs ('he began'); the Peshitta ܫܪܝ ܗܘܐ adds the auxiliary ܗܘܐ to form a compound past-progressive ('he was beginning'), a common Syriac tense construction marking durative or background action.

Both the Greek (αὐτούς) and the Peshitta (ܐܢܘܢ) supply the explicit accusative object 'them'; the Vulgate omits the object pronoun entirely after docere, leaving it implicit — a typical Latin economy.
