Greek ἔφη δέ ('and he was saying') is rendered by the Vulgate as Respondit ('he answered'), introducing a notion of response absent from the Greek verb of speaking; the Peshitta ܐܡܪ ('said') tracks the Greek more closely. The Greek connective δέ has no overt equivalent in either version.

The participle λέγων ('saying'), retained by the Vulgate as dicens followed by a colon introducing direct speech, is omitted by the Peshitta, which proceeds directly to the vocative without a redundant verb of speaking — a characteristic Syriac economy.

Greek διδάσκαλε ('Teacher') is matched semantically by Vulgate Magister, but the Peshitta substitutes the transliterated Semitic honorific ܪܒܝ ('Rabbi'), preserving the underlying Aramaic address that the Greek itself glosses elsewhere (cf. John 1:38).

The Greek prepositional phrase ἐν τῷ ὀνόματί σου and the Vulgate in nomine tuo are analytic constructions; the Peshitta condenses the whole into a single inflected form ܒܫܡܟ ('in your name') with proclitic preposition and pronominal suffix, a normal Syriac synthetic strategy.

All three attest 'casting out demons', but the Peshitta inverts the Greek participle-object order to verb ܕܡܦܩ followed by object ܫܐܕܐ within a relative clause headed by the proclitic ܕ-, whereas Greek and Latin keep the participle ἐκβάλλοντα / ejicientem before δαιμόνια / dæmonia.

The causal clause ὅτι οὐκ ἠκολούθει ἡμῖν ('because he was not following us') is preserved by the Peshitta as ܥܠ ܕܠܐ ܢܩܦ ܠܢ but is entirely absent from the Clementine Vulgate at this point, which closes the verse after prohibuimus eum — a notable Western shortening of the doubled 'follow' motif.
