The Greek substantival article οἱ ('they/the ones') is rendered by the Syriac demonstrative pronoun ܗܢܘܢ and the Latin demonstrative illi; all three express the resumptive subject, but Greek achieves it with the bare article whereas Syriac and Latin require an explicit pronominal form.

Greek uses the distributive periphrasis εἷς κατὰ εἷς ('one by one'), an idiomatic colloquialism with κατά governing the nominative; Syriac renders it by simple reduplication ܚܕ ܚܕ, the standard Semitic distributive; Latin compresses the whole expression into the single adverb singulatim, a more polished classical rendering.

The Greek transmits a doubled, expansive form of the disciples' question — καὶ ἄλλος, μήτι ἐγώ; ('and another, Surely not I?'), reflecting the repeated individual questioning of εἷς κατὰ εἷς. Both the Peshitta and the Vulgate (ending after a single Numquid ego?) omit this second clause, presenting only one instance of the question, a common abridgement of the redundant Greek phrasing.

The Vulgate's colon (introducing direct speech) and terminal question mark have no lexical counterpart in the Greek or Syriac token streams, which mark the interrogative purely by particle and editorial pointing; they are punctuation artefacts of the Clementine edition.
