Greek ἀπεκρίθησαν (aorist of ἀποκρίνομαι, 'they answered') and Latin responderunt both render the act of replying; the Peshitta uses ܐܡܪܝܢ from the root a-m-r ('to say'), a participial form expressing 'they say/said' rather than the explicit notion of answering, smoothing the Semitic idiom.

Greek introduces the disciples' speech with the recitative ὅτι (functioning like quotation marks before direct discourse); neither the Peshitta nor the Vulgate represent this particle, the Latin instead marking the speech with a colon and both relying on direct quotation without a complementiser.

The demonstrative object 'these' (τούτους / illos) stands early in the Greek and Latin clauses, but in the Peshitta ܠܗܠܝܢ is deferred to near the end of the sentence, reflecting Syriac word-order preference for placing the object after the verbal and locative material.

Greek ὧδε and Syriac ܗܪܟܐ both supply the locative adverb 'here'; the Clementine Vulgate has no corresponding word, leaving the spatial reference implicit in the prepositional phrase in solitudine.

The Peshitta adds ܟܠܗܘܢ ('all of them', root k-w-l) intensifying the demonstrative ܠܗܠܝܢ to read 'all these', an emphatic expansion not present in the Greek NA28 or the Vulgate, heightening the disciples' sense of the impossible magnitude of the crowd.

The Vulgate inserts a colon after discipuli sui to mark the transition into direct speech, a function served in Greek by the recitative ὅτι; this editorial punctuation has no lexical counterpart in the other traditions.

The Vulgate's terminal question mark corresponds to the interrogative force already encoded in the Greek ἐρημίας; (with its question mark) and in the Syriac interrogative ܐܝܡܟܐ; it is a typographic marker of the rhetorical question rather than a textual variant.
