Greek opens with the simple paratactic conjunction καί ('and'), while both the Peshitta (ܐܠܐ) and the Vulgate (sed) render an adversative 'but', interpreting the contrast between Herod's grief and his obligation to fulfil the oath. The Syriac and Latin thus agree against the Greek in supplying a stronger logical connective.

Greek εὐθὺς and Syriac ܡܚܕܐ both convey the characteristically Markan 'immediately'; the Vulgate omits any temporal adverb here, leaving the urgency unexpressed.

Greek uses an aorist participle ἀποστείλας ('having sent'); the Vulgate employs an ablative absolute misso ('one having been sent'), shifting voice to passive; the Peshitta resolves the participle into a finite verb ܫܕܪ ('he sent'), a typical Syriac preference for coordinate finite clauses over participial subordination.

Greek and Syriac name the subject explicitly with article + noun (ὁ βασιλεύς / ܡܠܟܐ, 'the king'); the Vulgate leaves the subject unexpressed, carrying it implicitly through the third-person verb præcepit.

Greek (τὴν κεφαλὴν αὐτοῦ) and Vulgate (caput ejus) read merely 'his head' with a pronoun; the Peshitta makes the referent explicit, reading ܪܫܗ ܕܝܘܚܢܢ ('the head of John'), an exegetical clarification naming John the Baptist directly rather than relying on the anaphoric pronoun.

The Vulgate alone adds in disco ('on a platter/dish') at this point, anticipating the platter mentioned later in the pericope (cf. Mark 6:28, ἐπὶ πίνακι); neither the Greek NA28 nor the Peshitta carry the detail in this clause.

Greek καί and Vulgate Et coordinate the next action ('and'); the Peshitta integrates this connection into the prefixed waw of ܘܐܙܠ ('and he went'), with no standalone conjunction.

Greek ἀπελθὼν ('having departed') and Syriac ܘܐܙܠ ('and he went') both narrate the executioner's going off to the prison; the Vulgate compresses the narrative and omits the verb of motion entirely.

Greek uses the technical denominative ἀπεκεφάλισεν ('beheaded'), echoing κεφαλή; the Peshitta ܦܣܩܗ derives from a general root for 'cutting/severing' (p-s-q) plus the object suffix, while the Vulgate decollavit ('removed the neck') reflects collum; all three express decapitation through different morphological strategies.

The Peshitta supplies a second explicit object, ܪܫܗ ܕܝܘܚܢܢ ('the head of John'), as the thing severed, again naming the Baptist where the Greek (αὐτόν, 'him') and Vulgate (eum) use only a pronoun; this is a Syriac clarifying expansion consistent with its earlier naming of John.
