Greek NT ἐξῆλθεν
Peshitta ܘܢܦܩ
Vulgate egressus est

The Greek aorist ἐξῆλθεν is rendered by the Syriac perfect ܘܢܦܩ (root n-p-q, conjunction prefixed), while the Vulgate employs a periphrastic perfect passive deponent egressus est; the Syriac fuses the conjunction Καί into the verb prefix, so index 0 covers both.

Greek NT καὶ οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ
Peshitta ܘܬܠܡܝܕܘܗܝ
Vulgate et discipuli ejus

The Greek and Latin spell out the conjunction, article, noun, and possessive pronoun (καὶ οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ / et discipuli ejus), whereas the Syriac compresses all four into the single inflected form ܘܬܠܡܝܕܘܗܝ, carrying conjunction, plural noun, and 3ms possessive suffix as agglutinated morphemes.

Greek NT Καισαρείας τῆς Φιλίππου
Peshitta ܕܩܣܪܝܐ-ܕܦܝܠܝܦܘܣ
Vulgate Cæsareæ Philippi

Greek inserts an intervening article (Καισαρείας τῆς Φιλίππου, 'Caesarea the [one] of Philip'), while Latin and Syriac present the toponym as a tight construct (Cæsareæ Philippi / ܕܩܣܪܝܐ-ܕܦܝܠܝܦܘܣ); the Syriac orthographically binds the two place-names with a hyphen as a single compound place-name.

Greek NT καὶ ἐν τῇ ὁδῷ
Peshitta ܒܐܘܪܚܐ
Vulgate et in via interrogabat

Greek and Latin position the prepositional phrase 'on the way' (ἐν τῇ ὁδῷ / in via) before the verb of asking, and the Vulgate adds a colon at index 11; the Syriac postpones ܒܐܘܪܚܐ until after the verb and its object, a word-order divergence typical of Syriac narrative syntax.

Greek NT ἐπηρώτα
Peshitta ܘܡܫܐܠ ܗܘܐ
Vulgate discipulos

The Greek imperfect ἐπηρώτα and the Latin imperfect interrogabat each express durative past action with a single form, whereas the Syriac builds the equivalent past-continuous periphrastically with the participle ܘܡܫܐܠ plus the auxiliary ܗܘܐ ('was asking'), a standard Syriac construction for imperfective aspect.

Greek NT αὐτοῖς·
Peshitta ܠܗܘܢ
Vulgate Quem me

The dative pronoun αὐτοῖς (Greek) and ܠܗܘܢ (Syriac, root l-h-w with dative prefix) correspond to Latin eis; the Vulgate additionally supplies a colon at index 20 to introduce the direct discourse, a punctuational gloss absent from the unpointed traditions.

Greek NT με
Peshitta ܥܠܝ
Vulgate esse

Greek με and Latin me are accusative objects of the verb of speaking; the Syriac renders the same referent with the prepositional phrase ܥܠܝ ('concerning me', root e-l-y), shifting from a direct accusative to a prepositional construction—an idiomatic Syriac way of expressing 'what people say of someone.'

Greek NT οἱ ἄνθρωποι
Peshitta ܐܢܫܐ

Greek uses the articular plural οἱ ἄνθρωποι and Latin the anarthrous homines for 'people'; the Syriac ܐܢܫܐ (root a-n-sh) is a collective noun for 'men/people', and notably the three traditions place this subject in differing positions relative to the verb.

Greek NT εἶναι;
Peshitta ܕܐܝܬܝ

The Greek infinitive εἶναι and Latin esse function as the complement of the verb of saying; the Syriac substitutes a finite relative clause ܕܐܝܬܝ ('that I am', root a-y-th with relative prefix), a construction rather than an infinitive. The Vulgate's interrogative complement esse stands at index 24 while the closing question mark is at index 26.
